Privacy Policy for the MovieScripter Formatter Chrome Extension
Effective Date: October 29th, 2025
This Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding the MovieScripter Formatter Chrome Extension ("the Extension"). Our philosophy is to be as transparent as possible and to respect your privacy.
Information We Collect (and What We Don't)
The MovieScripter Formatter is designed to be a private and secure tool. We do not collect, track, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information about you or the content of your documents.
- We Do Not See Your Document Content: The entire process of reading your Google Doc, formatting it, and displaying the preview happens locally within your browser. The content of your screenplay is never sent to, viewed by, or stored on our servers.
- We Do Not Collect Personal Data: The Extension does not require you to create an account, and it does not collect or transmit any personal information like your name, email address, or browsing activity.
How We Use Information
Since we do not collect your personal information or document content, we do not use it for any purpose.
The only information handled by the Extension is processed temporarily and locally on your computer for its core functionality:
- Document Content: The Extension temporarily reads the text of your active Google Doc to convert it from Fountain format into a formatted screenplay. This text is held in memory only while the extension's pop-up is open and is discarded when it is closed.
- User Settings: If you configure any settings (such as custom fonts or formatting preferences), this information is saved using the `chrome.storage` API. This data is stored either locally on your computer or synced to your own Google Chrome profile, and we do not have any access to it.
Extension Permissions Explained
The Extension requests a minimal set of permissions to perform its job. Here is why we need them:
- `activeTab`: This is the core permission. It allows the Extension to run only when you click on its icon. It grants temporary access to your currently open Google Doc so it can read the document's URL (to find the document ID) and then fetch the text content for formatting. It does not allow the extension to read your browsing history or content from any other tab.
- `storage`: This permission is used to save your personal extension settings, such as formatting preferences. This makes the extension more convenient by remembering your choices between uses.
Third-Party Services
The Extension interacts with Google's servers by making a request to the `docs.google.com` domain to download the plain text version of your document. This communication happens directly between your browser and Google's servers, leveraging your existing login session. We do not act as an intermediary, and we do not see or log this traffic.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
